Anne Taylor - 'Linking Architecture and Education'
Anne's book is aimed at architects and brings together issues around the developmental needs of learners with ideas of seeing educational buildings as '3-dimensional textbooks.' You can read more about here approach here.
TOWARDS CREATIVE LEARNING SPACES aims to bring together into one place, the global ideas, issues, examples and resources concerned with making learning spaces in universities and colleges more creative and effective.
TOWARDS CREATIVE LEARNING SPACES was developed as part of the Centre for Excellence in Teaching and Learning through Design (CETLD), one of over 60 HEFCE-funded projects from 2005 - 2010. The CETLD partnership was between the University of Brighton, the Royal College of Art, the Royal Institute of British Architects and the Victoria & Albert Museum.
This blog is now an archive for that group. It is occasionally updated with more recent resources, events and news. It is hosted by Jos Boys, previously Senior Research Fellow in Learning Spaces at the University of Brighton, and now an independent scholar and consultant; working on learning spaces for the University of Ulster, University of New South Wales, University of Calgary and and RMIT Vietnam. *In July 2013, Jos won the SCUP Perry Chapman Learning Spaces Research Prize. This is to look how what kinds of research methods can help campus planners better understand students' perceptions and experiences of the totality of their learning environment. * As part of that project, Jos and Diane Hazlett, Director of the University of Ulster's Centre for Higher Education Practice (CHERP) went to the University of Michigan, as part of a 'book-writing' conference.
* Since January 2013 Jos has been working as a consultant for he University of Ulster. This is on a learning spaces project supporting staff and students in their learning activities, as part of the longer-term move to Greater Belfast Development (GBD), the University's major new building, just beginning construction. This project has its own website at:
* Jos was invited as a participant to the Future Learning Environments - How Space impacts on Learning conference at the Karolinska Institute in Stockholm in July 2012, where it rained (hard) the whole time.
* The Re-shaping Learning? A Critical Reader book collection, edited by Anne Boddington and Jos Boys, has been published by Sense and can be purchased as either an e-book or on old-fashioned paper.
* In August 2011, Anne and Jos hosted a meeting with two researchers from the Danish Ministry of Science, who are examining good European examples of learning spaces, as part of deign guidance they are writing for the Danish higher education sector.
* Jos will be giving 2 guest lectures on learning spaces in May 2011, one at the Wolfsonian Museum in Miami Beach, USA, and the other at the SCHOMS annual conference in Newcastle.
* Jos's book - Towards Creative Learning Spaces: re-thinking the architecture of post-compulsory education - was published by Routledge in November 2010.
* The CETLD Learning Spaces group organised a conference in July 2010. Entitled Re-Shaping Learning? The Future of Learning Spaces in Post-Compulsory Education was a 2-day event, held at the University of Brighton, 21st-23rd July 2010. A book collection of contributors research, called Re-Shaping Learning: a critical reader will be published by Sense in Spring 2011.
* Jos was one of the speakers at a one day conference entitled Learning Landscapes and the Idea of the University, organised by the University of Lincoln Learning Landscapes group on 13th April 2010.
* CETLD Learning Spaces research is developing as a team. CETLD, together with the CETL in Creativity, have funded a research project - exploring methodologies for evaluating experiences of Learning Spaces - being undertaken by Clare Melhuish. And Hilary Smith has been working as a Research Fellow, with a particular interest in the relationships between technologies and learning spaces.
* CETLD hosted an event in December 2009 for the Learning Spaces SIGwhich included visits to both the CETLD and CETL-C learning spaces.
* Hilary recently attended a seminar organised by Learning Landscapes, the University of Lincoln based research group, which is exploring how academics and estates managers can work better together - an issue we are also very interested in.
